What is it, and how might we develop it?


        Teaching quality is important. This is arguably the biggest lever at our disposal to improve the life chances of young people in our care, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

When the quality of the teacher’s practice reaches a certain level, we can begin to describe it as expert teaching. However, we do not yet have a clear consensus on what it does, and until we do, our ability to develop it systematically will be limited.

This article aims to compile the best evidence available for learning and beyond to provide a clear, highly relevant summary of what is and how we can develop expert teaching. It is designed to share our thinking, direct our program design, and encourage conversations around the nature of expertise in teaching.
